This is the second quarter of a two-quarter survey course in particle phyiscs for graduate students. In this quarter we will continue our study of the phenomenological aspects, and the "nuts and bolts", of the subject. As students, you will be asked to take on a more active role in our coverage this term. Specifically, you will be asked to present material to the class that you will have learned, in consultation with me, from a variety of sources I will give you.
We will first complete our coverage Introduction to Elementary Particle Physics by David Griffiths. We (you) will cover, in some detail, the subjects of CP violation, and review the recent results from the B factories Babar at SLAC, and Belle at KEK. We will also cover aspects of "New Physics" (NP) - especially those for which information may emerge from the LHC at CERN.
Most lecture notes will be made available on the web, especially when I deviate most from Griffiths, but I do not promise they will be there for every lecture. Attendance is not mandatory, but you are responsible for all material presented in class, and for all changes to the schedule or plans which are announced in class.
Your final grade will be my best guess at your competence, and will be based on your total score from homework, midterm, final exam and class presentation of material that you will have learned. At present, my plan is to count homework as 15%, the midterms as 20% each, the final as 30% and class presentation 15% of your total score.
My office is room 448 in the Geology/Physics Building. My office phone number is 556-0531. My e-mail address is meadows@physics.uc.edu .
The exact schedule for lectures, homework, etc., will depend on how long it takes to cover the material, whether there are any school closings due to inclement weather, etc. I will try to keep the best-guess schedule up to date. However, you are responsible for all changes announced in class.
