Change in Exam Format
Starting in Fall '03, the format of the qualifying exam was changed from
three exams to two exams.
In the new format, the first exam is
twelve to twenty short answer problems
covering all areas of physics at the undergraduate
level. The second exam will be two
problems each from four areas: dynamics, thermophysics, electricity and
magnetism, and quantum mechanics. The student is asked to do one of
the two problems in each area. A practice exam in this new format
was given in Fall '02.
