ClassTalk, a Descreption: you're in the Demonstration Catalog
The process is suprisingly easy. From the main computer the instructor poses a question (a 'task' to ClassTalk) to the class which, via the network, is sent to the student. Using the palmtop, each student responds to the 'task' and sends it back to the instructor...via the network. Students are strongly encouraged to discuss the task amoung themselves before sending an answer. The instructor's computer keeps track of the res ponses and can display them, if desired, in the form of a histogram to the class through a large screen projection system or show the instructor individual responses in the seating chart.
A variety of questions can be asked using ClassTalk, Multiple choice, true or false, one word response, or full text questions are available. Most often qualitative, multiple choice questions are used to check the students understanding of pertinent current concepts. These questions are prepared beforehand and become an integral part of the days lecture. The questions can be prepared to isolate deficiencies in understanding a s in the conservation of energy v. the conservation of momentum. Also ClassTalk can be made to ask the student a question upon login...perhaps a question from an assigned reading!
Student response has been positive, with remarks about both learning from peers (e.g. discussing a question with the neighboring student before replying) and about the value of the instant feedback that is provided. Instructors find it useful as a feedback on the effectiveness of their own presentation. Student response to a question may direct that instructor next remarks. Classtalk has been used with great success in the calculus-bas ed physics classes (General Physics) and in courses for non-science students (e.g. The Physics of Light and Color).
