USEFUL REFERNCES

Dust in the Galactic Environment (2nd ed.) – D.C.B. Whittet (2003)

A very nice survey of dust in a variety of environments.  A good introduction to the subject, accessible to undergraduate & graduate students

Absorption & Scattering of Light by Small Particles – C.F. Bohren & D.R. Huffman (1983)

The essential reference on the optical properties of small particles. Essential reading for anyone venturing into the field in a serious way. Includes Fortran code for Mie scattering.

Light Scattering by Small Particles – H.C. van de Hulst (1957)

Granddaddy of important references on the subject of light interactions with small particles.

The Physics of Interstellar Dust – E. KrŸgel (2003)

A comprehensive textbook about dust – optical properties, structure & composition, grain formation & destruction, etc.

Theory of Reflectance & Emission Spectroscopy – B. Hapke (1993)

A textbook on the optical properties and radiative transfer of particulate surfaces of planets (regoliths), the first few chapters provide a nice summary of absorption & scattering by small particles.
