Electricity and Magnetism 3
15-030-306
Spring Quarter, 1999

Michael D. Sokoloff

Overview

This is the third quarter of the three-quarter junior-level Electricity and Magnetism course for physics majors. We will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 AM - 10:50 AM in room 312 Braunstein.  We will be using Electromagnetic  Fields by Wangsness again this quarter.   Although attendance is not mandatory, you are responsible for all material presented in class, and for all changes to the schedule or plans which are announced in class.

My office is room 411 in the Geology/Physics Building.  My office phone number is 556-0533.  My home phone number is 533-4265.  You are welcome to call me in my office at any time or at home between 8 AM and 10 PM.  There are answering machines at both numbers if I do not answer the phone.  My e-mail address is sokoloff@physics.uc.edu .  I read e-mail frequently.  I will schedule a regular office hour after consulting with the class.  In addition, you can make appointments with me or stop by my office at any time.  I am often around evenings and weekends, and I am available to work with you at these times as well as during "usual" business hours.

The final letter grade for this course will be my best estimation of your mastery of the material.  I expect to base it on weekly homework assignments,  one mid-term examination, and a final examination.  At the moment (March 24, 1999), my default plan is to use the following:

weekly homework 300
mid-term examination 300
final examination 400
TOTAL 1000

If you want to arrange an alternative procedure for my evaluating your mastery of the course material, please talk to me at the beginning of the quarter. Best Guess Schedule

The exact schedule for lectures and examinations will depend on how long it takes to cover the material, etc. The following is my best guess as of March 24.  Please note that the mid-term exam is scheduled for Thursday, May 6.  It will have two questions to be answered in class and two questions to be taken home. The take-home questions will be due on Monday, May 10 at 5 PM.  The final examination is scheduled for Thursday, June 10 from 2:15 PM - 4:15 PM.

Homework

Homework will usually be due Wednesdays at 5:00 PM in Anup Mishra's mailbox. In general, late homework will not be accepted. Approximately half of the problems will be selected randomly for grading, and each problem will be graded on a scale from 0 to 10. At the end of the quarter, there will be approximately 30 graded problems. I plan to drop the lowest 5 in computing your homework score. I encourage you strongly to work with other students doing the assigned problems, and to talk to me about how to do the problems. The earlier you start your assignments, the more you are likely to learn.
